You might have seen the stories of Sam and Luke, better known as the Garbage Bag Boys, pop up on your instagram feed, two young Melbourne based student paramedics not shy of a night shift or heading off the beaten track, understanding that life is precious and our time here is short.
After hitchhiking the length of India using any means of transport available, they were looking for their next experience, this time in true overlander style, by bicycle!
Their objective is simple: leave their lives in Melbourne behind and ride their steel touring bikes around the world; taking in the roads less travelled, forgotten back streets, mountain trails, dirt tracks and for the first time living on their bikes.

LUKE
What inspired the idea to ride round the world: After hitchhiking, driving, and catching local transport to get around, the idea of keeping fit whilst travelling and interacting with the environment in a more intimate way was something we thought riding a bike would allow us to do. And so, after a twelve hour shift on the ambulance the idea to cycle around the world was born!
Best moment from India: sleeping on top of a mountain and waking up to a hazy sunrise with a delicious coffee in hand. Pinching myself thinking we're only three days into the journey...

SAM
What inspired the idea to ride round the world:
I rode the Annapurna circuit on a beaten up mountain bike and instantly fell in love with the idea of bikepacking. The cocktail of freedom, speed, challenge and adrenaline pumping downhills had me hooked. After two weeks on the road I didn't want to stop, so I spent the next months trying to convince myself that I should run away,
Best moment from India: The far north state of Kashmir struck a lasting effect within me. From the winding road you could catch a glimpse of an impossibility far away summit caught in the fire of sunset. Not many tourists stray up that way during the winter, and we found our presence met with genuine curiosity, intrigue and hospitality.
The country you are most looking forward to: Tajikistan
Favourite Quote: "Growing up people often warned me about the dangers of alcohol, but no one thought to caution me on the risk of reading more books. I think I'd have a lot more money, mortality and safety in life if I had gone with the beer."
It’s a simple objective. Ride from one side of the world to the other. But the logistics of such a mission are anything but.
Leaving the comfort of everyday Australian life behind, the boys will start their almost 30,000km journey in Vietnam. Taking on the mountain tracks of Laos before heading to the iconic Ha Giang loop back across the border in Northern Vietnam. From there the huge adventure begins to cross China, south to north, towards Mongolia. Curve are no strangers in Mongolia, stories from Gus crossing the Steppe, and his numerous recon missions while scouting Expedition routes will give invaluable intel for the Garbage Bag Boys to take on the least populated country on the planet.
Continuing on towards the infamous bikepacking region of Kyrgyzstan, home to the Silk Road Mountain Race, a yearly 2000km pilgrimage known for its untouched wilderness, high mountain passes and unpredictable weather. The boy's time in Kyrgyzstan will come to an end following the Expedition Alay, a bikepacking route that connects the city of Osh to the Alay Valley, a perfect bookend to their time in this unforgettable country.
Passing the border over into Tajikistan the trails lead up into the Gorno-Badakhshan mountain range following the route of the Bartang Valley. Following remote dirt roads up and over 4000m, but long days, limited resupply and heavy loads is exactly the terrain the GMX+ Steel Touring was designed to traverse.
Crossing countries and closing in on Europe, the boys will be covering the Armenian stage of the Caucasus Crossing and be greeted with the warm hospitality of the Armenian people. A route well known for jagged rock faces and steep trails, progress might be slow going but the stories will showcase how much you can experience with life on a bike.
Onto the slightly more straightforward riding of the Cappadocia delight, a 400km route of champagne gravel and single track around the volcanic cultural heritage sites of Turkey, a loop the Boys didn’t need to add, but are doing so to get fully acquainted in their European experience. Continuing west following the Bike Odyssey race route, the Boys will be welcomed in Greece with spoon standing to attention coffee and alpine scenery. Soon to be deep in the Balkans and tracing the Mediterranean Sea towards the historic city of Vienna.
From there, a 3000km journey across the historic cycling landscape of northern Italy, the French Alps, Pyrenees and into the cycling hot spot that is Girona. From there the final stretch of stunning Andalusian mountains will take the Garbage Bag boys over the final few mountain passes before arriving, loaded with heavy legs and heaps of new stories into Malaga, the brand new home of Curve Europe headquarters!
THE BIKE SETUPS
Sam and Luke will be loading all their cargo onto a pair of Curve GMX+ Steel flat bar builds. An adventure bike inspired by the original overlanders and tested to its limits by the founders of Curve Cycling, the GMX+ is an adventure bike like no other. Designed around a huge main triangle to maximise space for luggage, clearance for a 3” tyre and the 10L (and more) water-carrying capabilities for adventures across the Australian outback, this is a bike that looks better with all the bags strapped on! But, more importantly, it is designed to be loaded and it comes alive once you do so. A full deep dive into the GMX+ Steel can be found HERE.
The matching pair will only be differentiated by one thing. Sam will be rocking the Roadhouse Pink build, Curve’s iconic nod to the legendary Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta which forms part of one of the Race To The Rock series we put on each year. While Luke will be rolling on the Nitro Chocolate, this colour way is based on the black doctor we all know and love when riding (Coca-Cola) with some Overlanders likening it to a subtle moonlight sparkle on a remote gibberish plain. Both bikes will give the Garbage Bag Boys fond memories of home while they venture off across the globe.
A huge thank you to Tailfin, K-Lite & Terra Rosa Gear for coming on board and supporting the Garbage Bag Boys and Curve on this project!
