What do you get when you combine a BMX with the Curve GMX+? Well, we threw on some BMX-style bars, a chunky BMX stem, flat pedals and some assorted extras, then sent our very own Swedish mechanic into the wild to find out!
Behold: The B/GMX+
The GMX+ has already established itself as the ultimate bikepacking bike for everything from an impromptu weekend of gravel adventuring to the realms of ultra-endurance racing across epic landscapes and distances. However, how does this adventure-ready titan handle when a set of BMX bars & stem, a basket and some heavy duty rubber are thrown on and taken onto the trails?
The idea behind transforming the GMX+ all stemmed wanting to see how the bike would handle being turned into an even more laidback touring-style bike. With a greater emphasis on comfortable flat bar positioning with space for a large top roll bar bag, the Curve team looked to create the ultimate "Basket Packing" bike that would be more suitable to the relaxed tourer or even the all-out hipster wanting a uniquely capable all-terrain adventure-mobile.
But Why?!
The Curve team pulled all the favours to acquire a set of these hand-shaped and welded Moné / Oddity Cycles Oddmoné bars. These bad boys are modelled on old school Moto/BMX styling with a crossbar, more rise and a greater backsweep than your usual, modern-day mountain bar.
The Haro Lineage top load stem belongs to Curve's very own Swedish head mechanic, Jimmy Röstlund. Not only does Jimmy own this hefty, solid stem, he also designed the stem for Haro for use with their Lineage range of BMX bikes!
For rolling over a multitude of mixed terrain with blissful ease, the pair of 29er Dirt Hoops are shod with Teravail Coronado mountain tyres with a fetching gum sidewall. These tyres were designed to tackle everything from bumpy gravel roads, to heavy sand thanks to the combination of mild centre tread and more aggressive side knobs.
The bike is finished off with a pair of Primo Super Tenderizer Pedals in gold! These make for great ease of use with normal, flat shoes and provide a wide, grippy surface to push your way through the lands of adventure.
Finally and most importantly, the basket! Not only can it carry all (well, most!) of the worldly belongings that you should choose to take on an adventure with you, it also is suitable for attaching extra bags and rolls should you need even more space than is already amply on offer. We've still got more stuff to bolt on and experiment with, stay tuned.
